SuperWinch Front Hub Replacement

The standard Warn/IH Lockamatic hubs were shot. One side was missing two drive pins, and the other refused to completely turn to the Lock position. I've heard that NOS hubs are extremely rare, and Warn repair kits are equally hard to come by. I talked to Tom Mitkiff of AT Scouts about getting a set of replacement Warn premium hubs. He told me that he had bought the last 20 pairs of hubs for Scouts from Warn, and had sold them all. SuperWinch offers a premium hub for the Scout, so I order a set from Tom.

Use a 9/16 socket to remove the six outer bolts from the hub body. (Hint: use a lot of PBlaster beforehand if you want any success in removing them!) The IH service manual states to use a thin-wall socket, but I used a 14 mm socket and a little "tapping" with a mallet to seat it on the bolt head.

Remove the outer half and use a set of snap-ring pliers to remove the retaining snap ring from the axleshaft.

Carefully pull off the inner half of the old hub and clean the surfaces of any grime and grit. Now's a great time to repack and grease those bearings!! Because the new hub body doesn't have the clutch mechanism of the Lockamatics, shorter bolts are necessary. I bought 12 Grade 5  1 3/4" hex head bolts and lock washers. Be sure to sure some Anti-Seize compound on the threads if you hope to take the hub off again! The new hubs come with a pair of paper gaskets for use behind the inner half of the new hub.

Replace the retaining snap ring.

Place the outer half of the new hub (be sure it's unlocked) onto the inner half. Secure the the supplied Allen bolts (after applying Anti-Seize on them first) and tighten to 35-40 inch-pounds.
